Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

From the Perry Township Meeting Minutes of January 9, 2012:

"Pros Attorney explained that the Sugar Grove Church wanted to deed the cemetery to the township, as per Ohio R.C.. The church has had the cemetery surveyed and wants part of it for church parking. The Attornery General of Ohio has a cemetery department but is not involved in this kind of dispute.

After a very long discussion a motion was made by Smith and seconded by Bowers to accept the cemetery back with a $6000.00 settlement payment due upon receipt of deed. There was an agreement for the church to re a line the drive over about ten feet and that the grave that is to be moved, be moved before issueing the deed. Also there was a gentleman’s agreement that a church board member would meet with a trustee some time each year to review the line fence.

Vote to accept this was 3 Yeas.
