Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

Reporting the sad news of a recent attack resulting in major vandalism at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio

It is so heartbreaking to share this link to the "Findlay Courier" online news story, published July 28, 2021, with details and photographs of toppled over and lying on the ground broken 19th century grave monuments.

All that is known, according to the report, is that an unknown vandal or vandals launched the vicious attack seriously damaging grave markers and monuments at several gravesites at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay.

Excerpt:

"According to the Findlay Police Department, the vandalism occurred overnight from Monday into Tuesday. Thirty tombstones were either toppled or damaged, all in the northeast section of the cemetery."

"The police department continues to investigate the incident, and anyone with information about who may be involved is asked to call the department at 419-424-7150 or Hancock County Crime Stoppers at 419-425-8477. Callers may be eligible for a reward."

A Link to Clinton County WPA Cemetery Plat Maps has been Posted on the Blog's Right Sidebar

Images of the Clinton County, Ohio WPA Cemetery Plat Maps have been posted on the right sidebar of the blog in alphabetic order among the other Ohio counties listed.  These images were saved in the .JPG format.

Most Clinton County map pages have page numbers in the lower right corner, but a few do not.  There are a few newer maps included as well and noted as such.

This set of maps was created in a similar format adopted for the maps of other Ohio counties.

For each photo album, the title arrangements from left to right are the project title name, followed by the township name, and name(s) of the cemeteries in that township.

The descriptions for each township album show the actual names given each map page in ascending number order.

The map pages that contain more than one cemetery with more than one township represented on the same page are saved separately under the title: "Multiple Townships - Smaller Cemeteries" and placed at the end of the Clinton County Cemeteries Collection created for the county.

Happy Fourth of July 2021! & Remembering America's Revolutionary War veterans who found peace and rest in Ohio.

As we return to partaking in more activities to celebrate this July 4th 2021 American Independence Day, we reflect on those Revolutionary War veterans who made it possible for us to enjoy the freedoms we have.

As most of us know many American Revolutionary War veterans were buried right here in Ohio.

We can turn to the  Ohio History Connection which offers online links that help us better understand how Ohio became a destination for many of those veterans who chose to stay in the Buckeye State to the end of their lives and were laid to rest on its soil.

Spotlighting one of Ohio's premier early cemeteries, the Mound Cemetery in Marietta, we learn that it contains a large number of burials of American Revolutionary War officers. During our travels throughout the state, we have come to learn that Ohio's smaller and more obscure cemeteries also contain burials of those who served in the American Revolution.  Hopefully, their graves are marked and American flags were put in place that denote their patriotic service to America. We thank them all for their service and sacrifices; and may they rest in eternal peace.
