Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

Of particular note is the burial listed for Alethea M. Clark. She was laid to rest at the age of 35 in Lot 1, Grave 6.

The war service designation is Number 31 which corresponds with World War I, known at that time as the "Great War".  It was the latest war that occurred during the years of the Works Progress Administration when these plat maps were drawn.

Story from the "Lima News" about Deb Garver and her cemetery work in Allen, Hancock, Hardin, and Putnam Counties Ohio

Thanking "Save A Grave" for bringing my attention to this story written by ROSANNE BOWMAN -
419-993-2084 that was published yesterday online by the "Lima News." Click on title to access it.

Quoting a point from this story:

"2. What do you do to research them? What is the process?"

"The order of events, I guess you'd say, is I go to the cemetery, and I take pictures of all the stones. If I can't read them, then I use shaving cream, which I wipe on the stone and it goes into the crevices and makes the stones easier to read. It doesn't hurt the stones at all; I teach chemistry by the way. I come home, and put it all on the computer. I look them up on ancestor.com to see if I can find any other information about them. Then I include that information along with the picture I took as a memorial on an online cemetery. This way, someone in California can see great-grandpa's actual gravestone."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only issue that most of us would have with this approach is the use of the shaving cream. It has been stated many times, including by "The Association for Gravestone Studies", that it is NOT good to use shaving cream on gravestones.
So, please click on "The Association for Gravestone Studies" link above in this paragraph to learn the reasons and recommendations for best practices and proper methods of cleaning gravestones.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overall, this is a wonderful story to read and is worth sharing. Deb is to be congratulated for her work in documentating gravesites in her area on "Find A Grave".

Spotlighting the Hardin County Genealogical Society

Spotlighting The Hardin County Genealogical Society in Hardin County, Ohio.

Click on title to access the website "hardincountyconnections" for the Hardin County Genealogical Society.

The current Spring-Summer 2011 issue of the Hardin County Genealogical Society's Newsletter, "Track and Trace" under the main page column heading: "President's Pen" by Kathy Hines, is a paragraph about the society's upcoming projects for doing more tombstone transcriptions at Hardin County cemeteries.

The work includes finishing their projects in Washington Township, and completing Patterson Cemetery in Jackson Township.

Their plan is to move on to work at the large Hueston Cemetery by next summer.

Quoting from the newsletter about the work of reading tombstones, Kathy states:

"The work is slow and hot as well as sometimes frustrating when it comes to deciphering the old weather-worn stones."

I agree and say how true that is, but we have to be thankful they are still there at all to try to read.

Untold numbers of grave markers have been lost to history for one reason or another, and the trend unfortunately continues.

Thus, I wish to express here my appreciation to the Hardin County Genealogical Society and to those who have braved the elements to conduct their work transcribing tombstone inscriptions.

It is a time consuming work that is valuable in so many ways that benefits those of us here today and for those generations that will be here in the future.   Thank You!!

Charles and Garnet Limes - Ridgeway Cemetery - Ridgeway, Hardin County, Ohio

Top photograph taken June 1, 1997. Middle photograph taken June 4, 2000. Lower photograph taken October 3, 2004.

Several cleaning trips are sometimes needed to more fully eradicate lichen and tree drippings on some stones. This white marble monument for Charles and Garnet Limes sits under a particuarly "weepy" tree that appears to be a pine. It would be difficult to cut away all of the branches to prevent further dripping on this stone. Repeated visits using soft plastic bristle and plastic scraper cleaning tools and generous rinsing have resulted in improved appearance and readability of the stone.
