Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

Thanking Eli Allen, creator of "WanderingAppalachia" for taking photographs (see examples above and below) at both the Friends (Quaker) and Butcher (Walnut Grove) cemeteries in North Lewisburg, Champaign County, Ohio; including some 360 degree panoramic type photographs which really help tell the story of these two early Ohio cemeteries and their current condition.

Unfortunately, neither cemetery is in good condition.  Both are located wholly within the boundaries of The Village of North Lewisburg so they are not the responsibility of Rush Township.

Sadly, the Butcher Cemetery is in worse condition due to severe lack of routine care.:

-- The landscape is in need of regular grass cutting; trimming weeds around markers and monuments; as well as repairing and re-setting markers and monuments for those that need it.

-- Also, dead trees and tree branches lying on the ground need to be removed.

-- The cemetery sign needs to be painted or replaced due to peeling paint.

Eli has shared his photographs on "Google Maps":

Susan Victoria Dickerson (1859 - 1861) - Find A Grave Memorial

Information for Susan Victoria Dickerson, buried at the Friends Cemetery in North Lewisburg, Champaign County, Ohio has been updated today.

Thanking "Find A Grave" contributor, Barbara Wright, for sharing her Dickerson family history.

Barbara Wright wonders if Susan's sister, Emily J. Dickerson - (Born May 19, 1862 in North Lewisburg and who died April 11, 1864) - was also buried at the Friends Cemetery, but thus far no stone has been found for her.

Susan Victoria Dickerson (1859 - 1861) - Find A Grave Memorial

Thanking "Find A Grave" member Mr. Bob Younger  who so kindly contacted me with a correction and also provided a wealth of additional information about the family of Susan Victoria Dickerson whose lifespan was only a short two years. She lived and died over 150 years ago.

Susan was the only one in her family buried at the Friends (Quaker) Cemetery in North Lewisburg, Champaign County, Ohio because the rest of her family moved farther west and lived out their lives in other states.  Please see her "Find A Grave" Memorial and read more information about her parents and siblings.

Quaker (Friends) Cemetery records on-line on the North Lewisburg, Champaign County, Ohio website

Click on title to link to the records for the Quaker (Friends) Cemetery that I have compiled regarding the burials at this inactive cemetery in North Lewisburg, Ohio.

Below is an almost unreadable stone at the Friends Cemetery for Lydia A. Fell Brown, wife of Edwin J. Brown.  She was born July 31, 1834 and died June 11, 1863, per a D. A. R. tombstone reading, however, Fell family records have a date of death of June 11, 1866.  More cleaning, and possibly some limited chalking over the dates needs to be done to further verify the year.
