Historic Mound Cemetery in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio will be receiving long needed repair or replacement of markers in the most deteriorated condition

Mr. Mike Ryan, Washington County Historical Society Treasurer, provided his first-hand knowledge of the condition of the Mound Cemetery emphasizing the long standing need to repair and/or replace several hundred early markers that are in endangered by their severe deterioration. 

Excerpt:

"For the ones which are unreadable, Ryan is trying to figure out who is buried near them. He is working on building a new map of the cemetery, but old maps show who owns the plot, not necessarily who is buried there.

He has been taking photos of the burial information and building a database from what he’s found so far."

“Mound Cemetery”, written by Marietta College English professor Owen Hawley and published in 1996, has helped him tremendously with his efforts, he said. It is an examination of historical, genealogical and artistic aspects of the cemetery, according to the historical society."

This burial site is behind the County Health Bldgs at the corner of Muskingum Drive and Colegate Road. To reach this cemetery, follow the two track road up a hill behind the building. (Note it is a very steep climb.) Once at the top you will need to walk a ways to the area where the marker is.

All names have been recorded. Only the bronze monument/plaque remains. There are no individual markers left. The area has a fence around it and is mowed.

The historical account gives us a detailed look at the oldest cemetery in the Northwest Territory, the Harmar Cemetery, which opened in 1796.

Local historian, Mr. Ben Bain, is spotlighted for his dedicated efforts to document burials at the Harmar Cemetery.

The title of the story is:

‘Forgotten’ cemetery: Harmar stands alone as the oldest' -- but thanks to those who have cared, the stories of the lives of those who found peace and rest at Harmar Cemetery's hallowed grounds will be retold time and again.

Sharing a recent news story about the Ava Maria Cemetery in Watertown Township, Washington County, Ohio

Click on link to read a December 29, 2011 news story featured in the "The Marietta Times" written by Tom Shawver about the history of the Ava Maria Church and adjacent cemetery.  Many members of the Schwendeman family are buried there.  There are five photographs of different views of the cemetery included with his story.

Currently, "Find A Grave" lists 119 interments at the Ava Maria Cemetery.

The Cemetery is listed as the "Ave Maria - Saint John" Cemetery on page 669 of the book, "Ohio Cemeteries: 1803 - 2003" published by the Ohio Genealogical Society in 2003.

Sharing a link to a story by the Marietta Times in Marietta, Ohio that was published today online (click on title) about the Putnam Cemetery and its history dating back to 1820. 

Many early settler names are included among those who were buried there including Putnam, Barker, Russell, and Devol.
