Per conversation with Becky (Rebecca) Reed, phone number: 937-217-1897 on October 4, 2018, the original WPA Cemetery Plat Maps are at the Recorder’s Office.  She said that they are not bound in a book but are loose papers.  She mentioned that Mr. Mark Tolle is the recorder and the person to contact.

Spoke to Mark Tolle on October 5 2018.  The Recorder’s Office has the originals available to view and photograph.  He said that they are not recorded documents.  He also stated that their office no longer has the individual veterans’ grave cards.  That they were turned over to the Adams County Historical society.

The center includes a genealogical collection, museum, post office, and log house.
This is open on Thursday and Saturday from 12:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M.

For more information about the center, call 937-544-8522 during those normal open hours.

Photographic copies of all of the original WPA Cemetery Plat Maps that continue to remain at the Adams County Recorder’s Office were made in 2018 and reduced in size to fit into a 8-1/2” x 11”notebook.  Becky mentioned Margaret Moss who lives in Kansas was involved with this project.

Unfortunately, the maps do not show veterans’ names, their burial location on the map, nor their war service record.  The “box” for the Wars Legend was drawn but without any information in it.
Becky also sent me an email on October 4th, 2018.  This was in response to my email to the Adams County Genealogical Society (email of:  ACGSoh@yahoo.com) sent on October 3, 2018.  Also on October 4, 2018, Becky sent an email with photographs of a couple of Adams County WPA Cemetery Plat Maps.  Unfortunately, no veterans’ names or burial locations are written on the maps.  See below.:

Yes we have these maps available to the public. Please go to www.browncountygis.com then "MAPS" then "GENERAL MAPPING"  Once the map has loaded you can turn on the cemetery layer.

Zooming and panning the map will reveal the locations of the cemeteries.  If you hover over the icon for the cemetery a tool tip will direct you to the plat which should show the maps your referring to.  Hope this helps.

1930s era drawn maps - perhaps in a large bound book

Good morning!

We do have a cemetery plat book, but it does not include veteran burial information. This book is just the layout of the cemetery plots.

We do however have a Veteran Grave Registration Search that would allow someone to search where a particular veteran is buried. This search is available on our website.

I hope this helps!

“We should have a plat for every cemetery on that list.

We do have Veteran Grave Registration Cards and also some other older soldier records including the burial records and discharges.

I am unsure of how complete the series is because I have never had to retrieve them and they are stored offsite. Let me know if it is something you are interested in searching through. We can arrange to have them ready to view.”

Nick Hoover shared the WPA Cemetery Plat Map page for the Nazarene Cemetery now known as the Old Baptist Cemetery (and a “Colored Cemetery” is also on the same page) on page 42 found in the Clermont County WPA Cemetery Plat Map book.  He also shared a map with locations of cemeteries in Clermont County as well as an Index to all of the cemeteries in Clermont County with numbers that correspond to the map.

Researchers are welcome to visit Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Address is 3951 Perkins Ave. Cleveland, OH 44114.  Free parking is available on E. 40th St. facing the building.

You will use the Perkins Ave. entrance (around the corner) and enter the vestibule. You will see an intercom and should choose the option for the Archives - 3rd floor.

On the same panel you will see a button with a bell imprinted on it. When you press it you will be connected to someone on the Archives staff. That person will "buzz" you in and you will proceed  through the double doors and straight ahead into the lobby and then slightly to the right. You will see the elevator and take it to the third floor where you will enter into the Archives space.

When you come in please request to see the Cemetery Plat Map on microfilm.  No appointment is necessary.

The Archives does have in its holdings both microfilm and hard copies of the Cemetery Plat Map for Cuyahoga County. As the original record is somewhat fragile the staff will ask you to use the copy on microfilm.

The Archives has one volume for Cuyahoga County; and it includes a large index map that identifies all of the cemetery locations in the County, and that map is followed by individual pages for the various cemeteries.  The cemetery maps only document the names and burial sites for veterans of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Spanish American, WWI, etc.

The Archives staff can make copies of the relevant pages from the microfilm, and if legible I would attach them to an email communication. If it appears that paper copies are easier to read I would send them by U.S. mail to your address. Please let me know which option is best for you and the staff will act accordingly.

“We have a set of the WPA maps of the cemeteries.  These maps just have the markings/numbers of the grave where the veteran is buried, and no names on the maps.  I did see a small cemetery where names were on the page.

We also have notebooks with all the burials of the Civil War veterans listed with the grave # and cemetery information.  I am now also getting the 1812, Mexican and Spanish Am. veterans copied and typed up.  (from the grave registration cards at the Recorders office)  I hope to get those typed up in a couple of weeks but can check my notes for any of those burials.

The WPA maps are rather large and may be difficult to copy.  Some of the smaller cemeteries would be easy to copy.  I think we got our maps from the Engineers office.”

“Our cemetery record sheets are bound in a large book. We do have a few miscellaneous prints stuck in with them. Back in the late 1960's and up to maybe ten (10)years ago, they were available for copying.  A little over six (6) ago, the county engineer asked me to serve as the map department supervisor and, at that time, I started scanning the pages.  I can now print a copy from the digital file I created (which we are required to charge a nominal fee for) or I can, in my opinion, now justify providing a PDF or TIF formatted file(s) at no charge ... because (again, in my opinion) there are no copier or supplies expense involved in providing the "digital copy" to the general public.  And, often times, folks just want them to view or for reference only, anyway.  And, of course, as I'm sure you know, since those formats are so standard now, especially PDF, folks can always print them at home, if they want.

Our office is located in the Rutherford B. Hayes Administration Building, on the 1st floor, at 140 North Sandusky Street and our hours are 8am to 5pm, Monday thru Friday, except holidays (we are open Columbus Day, also).  I always suggest that visitors who are not familiar with our area actually use an address of "140 North Union Street" in their navigation units, which directs them much better to the actual available parking and entrance to the building.”

If you would like the images in a PDF format I can put them onto a CD the cost for pick up here would be $6.00 to ship out.  We also have to charge for shipping ($2.50) so that would come out to $8.50.

If you would prefer Jpeg format I would have to burn them onto a DVD.

Cost would be $12.00 picked up or $14.50 shipped.

I do have the WPA Cemetery Plats for Fairfield County available, but the file is large. If there is a certain page that you would like I could email you a page, but If you want all 141 pages you would either have to come into the office or we could invoice you and send you a CD with all the data.

These maps do not have veteran listings, however, but the maps are well drawn and may be of help to researchers.  Contact the Hancock Engineer’s office directly for more information.  They have scanned their maps in large .pdf formats.

Thanking Susan Leininger of the Ohio Daughters of the War of 1812 for informing me that the Licking County Genealogical Society has the WPA Cemetery Plat Maps for Licking County.  The maps are at the genealogical society’s library located within the main Licking County Library in Newark.

On December 4, 2013 spoke by phone to volunteer, Terry, at the Licking County Genealogical Library.  He said that the WPA Cemetery plat map pages are encased in plastic and are quite large.

He said that the pages can be copied on 11” x 17” paper in sections.  The photocopy costs are 25 cents per 11” x 17” and 15 cents for 8-1/2” x 11” size paper.

See the listing below for their genealogical collection including:

“B – West Wall of Library 7. Map of Cemeteries Grave Registration of Licking County.”

Ruth Osborn, Librarian – January 2, 2014:

So you can put on under Licking County that the Licking County Genealogical Society has copies of the Licking County WPA maps of cemetery plat maps of veterans graves.  The is a total of 125 pages that are the cemeteries map and veterans name and location on the map.  The pages are  16” x 24” and we have no way to photo copy that large of pages.

We can copy sections of the maps but not the whole page on one page. Our Library is open Tuesday and Thursday 12:00 to 4:00, Wednesday 1:00 to 7:30, Friday and Saturday 1:00 to 4:00.

We have made up from the graves registration cards 10 books in alphabet order of the Licking County, Ohio Veterans that has their name, address, date of death/ place, cause of death, date of birth/place, names of cemetery location, lot, next of kin, war served date enlisted, date discharged branch of service, company, outfit or ship.  Copies of these are at library .15 cent each or mailed for $2.00 each.

Hello Linda,

I had an opportunity to look at our local government records holdings while I was on the desk this evening.

While we do not appear to hold the WPA Cemetery Plat Maps for Wood County, I did locate maps for Putnam County (Roll 78), though many of them appear to be blank.

Additionally, I located more detailed cemetery plat maps in our Ohio Veterans Home (Sandusky) records (Roll 7).

I have included a couple of sample pages for each of these groupings in the attached PDF (pages 1-6 are Putnam County; 7-12 are Ohio Veterans Home).

On November 12, 2013, I called 330-447-6781 to the Stark County Engineer’s Office.  I was transferred to their Tax Map office and spoke with a gentleman there named Paul.  He told me that his office did not have WPA Cemetery Plat Maps, however, he said their office has cemetery plat maps that were drawn much later.

He mailed me a CD of the maps.  They are saved in the .tiff format.

A researcher would have to contact them regarding viewing and/or copying any of the cemetery plat maps that they have.
Thus, I am still looking for the actual WPA Cemetery Plat maps as of this writing.

Hi Ms. Ellis,

Our Warren County Map Room does have the mylars for the WPA cemeteries, and we do have some paper copies in our office.

Unfortunately the maps are not online.  Do you know the name of the cemetery or the town or township your relative is buried in?  If we can find the cemetery your ancestor is buried in, we can make a copy for you.

The cost for an approximate 2’ x 3’ would be fifty cents per page.

If you would like to send me the name of your ancestor and the name of the cemetery if you know it, or a town or township that it might be located in we would be happy to help.

Please email me directly and I’ll try to help you.

Thank you,

Bobbi Apking

The Wyandot County Recorder’s Office has the WPA Cemetery maps both in their large original size format, and in smaller size paper copies.

Individual arrangements must be made to photograph the larger size pages.  The smaller size map pages are more difficult to read.
