Sharing a Story from the Blog "Brady's Bunch of Lorain County Nostalgia" and the "Morning Journal" -- "Brownhelm Tombstones Disclose Segments of State's Political Past"

I admit it, I'm a 'blog nut" -- I enjoy composing posts for this blog and presenting, to the best of my ability, information relating to cemetery preservation in Ohio.  Along with the preservation aspects of tombstones, gravesites and cemeteries, I feel it is worthwhile to stay focused on the fact that almost every day almost forgotten gravesites in our Buckeye State are being re-discovered; and those stories need to be shared as well.

Also, I enjoy reading other people's blogs and have included permanent links to several here.  Please review them because from time to time I will be updating and adding new ones.  When I note that a blog has not posted any recent activity, it is subject for removal, however.  

But, today, I am proud to share here a blog post from one of my favorite blogs:

First, just a word or two about me.  I was born and raised in Lorain, Ohio.  It is, from all accounts, the largest city between Cleveland and Toledo that sits on Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline.  

Unfortunately, Lorain's past is far more glorious and glamorous than its present.  

However, those of us who are native Lorainites remain proud of it despite the negative press it often receives.  Or, in many cases, no press at all!!  I say this because to my mind, for many reasons, Lorain sits in the shadows of its much larger neighbor -- Cleveland.  For example, many Eastsiders in Cuyahoga County (where Cleveland is the county seat) know there is a Lorain Road running east to west on the west side of the county.   

If you just say "Lorain" some folks may think you are speaking of Lorain Road.  Their next thought might be "Lorain County."  But, when I say "I'm from Lorain," I mean the city itself.  

Both Lorain City and Lorain County have a rich past.  Personal histories for each have often overlapped from city to county and vice versa.  I try to keep that thought in mind too.

Spotlighting Evergreen Cemetery - Saint Paris, Champaign County, Ohio

Once again thanking Diana Goodes, "Find A Grave" contributor, for sharing some of her photographs taken in November, 2010 during her trip to several Ohio cemeteries.  

Today, we feature the Evergreen Cemetery in Saint Paris, Champaign County, Ohio.

Currently, there are 2,333 interments listed at Evergreen Cemetery on "Find A Grave."

Paying Return Visits to the Black Cemetery in Rush Township, Champaign County, Ohio and the Old Burying Ground in Greenfield, Highland County, Ohio

"Find A Grave contributor, Diana Goodes, has been so kind to also share some of her longer-shot views of the Black Cemetery that were taken in 2010 as well as Greenfield's Old Burying Ground.    


These photographs clearly show the poor condition of the Black Cemetery.  Meanwhile, progress has been made on Greenfield's Old Burying Ground for completed restoration.

"These pictures were taken Nov 2, 2010 and yes I think it is totally abandoned!  I don't know if you've ever been there....it sits out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by farm land and an old farm house next to it.  There is a broken down barbed wire fence around it.  Someone mows the lawn/weeds going from the road, up the hill, but that's about it.

 James and Mary Diana (Van Horn) Glendening are my husband's 3rd Great Grand Parents. All the other Glendenings there are Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, etc.

 James and Margaret (McClung) Musson are his 4th Great Grand Parents.

 Dr. John and Caroline (Rogers) are his 2nd Great Grand Parents.

Donald L and Mary Ann (Musson) Glendening are his Great Grand Parents.  

Thomas J. and Hester (Shover) Glendening are his 2nd Great Grand Parents.
