Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

"Headstones - history uncovered in small Clark County graveyard"

Sharing from the Springfield News-Sun, November 18, 2020 - by columnist, Pam Cottrel, this inspiring story of how a small almost forgotten cemetery is getting much needed help from those who are dedicated to saving it for future generations.

We rarely read success stories being written about long inactive and small, out of the way cemeteries in Ohio (or anywhere for that matter!), but this one about the Minnich Graveyard in Clark County, Ohio is a true success story in a major way that proves there can be hope for others like it.

Enjoy viewing the Lowry family monument recently created and hand carved by renowned Indiana carver, Casey Winningham, who is indeed an expert in his field.

Excerpt from the article:

"Any historical or genealogical information that might help with the restoration project would be greatly appreciated, especially by Miles who would like to meet some local Lowry cousins.

Winningham is also available for additional restoration work in this area and for custom made stones. He can be contacted at (812) 327-3565. A gallery of his work can be viewed at.:"

An urgent plea from the Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio -- Seeking family of man who may have frozen to death

Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield is seeking to find the family of Robert Pinkerton.

Excerpt from news story.:

"Ferncliff Cemetery and Funeral Home is in possession of Robert Pinkerton’s body, general manager Rob Jones said, and hopes to reach his family before he is cremated."

"Pinkerton was found in the shed late on Sunday, Jan. 20. A Springfield police report says he was homeless and sleeping in a shed when he died.
He was 57." Jones said the cemetery and funeral home is seeking the family to notify them that he is in their care.
He said two step-brothers of Pinkerton have been found, but if there is a closer relative the cemetery and funeral home would like to get authorization from them."
“What we are not concerned about is any financial reimbursement,” Jones said. “There is some city of Springfield money available which we will be applying for but even if we can’t get that we are doing that as a charitable gesture to show our concern.”

How Springfield Boy Scout Earned His Eagle Scout Status from His Efforts at St. Raphaels Cemetery

Click on title to link to a story that ran March 29, 2011 in the "Springfield News-Sun" newspaper and online that spotlights how local Boy Scout, Christopher Vandiford, was awarded the distinction of becoming an Eagle Scout following his extensive work to document and clean up the St. Rapahels Cemetery in Springfield, (Clark County) Ohio. The feature article is very well written by staff writer, Tom Stafford.

"Find A Grave" has the cemetery listed as "Saint Raphaels" Cemetery. Currently, 338 interments are listed for it on the site.

Also, I discovered another site with some great close up pictures of some of the gravestones at the St. Raphaels Cemetery.

It is: a "webshots.com" site and the pictures were posted by "georgeannmalowney" as:

"Cannon Balls stolen from South Charleston Cemetery" - Greenlawn Cemetery - South Charleston, Clark County, Ohio

Click on title to read a story from the "Springfield News-Sun" published on May 3, 2011 of the recent theft of nine Civil War era cannon balls that were part of a memorial to veterans at the Greenlawn Cemetery located in South Charleston, Clark County, Ohio.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
My thanks to my neighbor and friend, Rick Luciano, who alerted me to this story which is also posted in part on "Cleveland.com."
It is quite sad to see this type of theft at a cemetery's veterans memorial that honors the area's soldiers who served our country.
