Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

Taking a Scenic Tour of some Seneca County, Ohio Cemeteries with Ron & Sheila Amore.

First, I feel it important to extend my appreciation to Ron and Sheila Amore for sharing their photographs that they have taken during their tours of several North Central Ohio cemeteries.

They have been regular contributors to the Facebook Group "Preserving Ohio's Cemeteries".  They are helping to preserve cemeteries through their photographic documentation which illustrates the current condition of so many rural burial grounds that dot Ohio's landscape that exist in various areas of the state.

Sharing this story from Seneca County, Ohio - From "The Advertiser-Tribune" in Tiffin - by Vicki Johnson - "Restoring History" - October 29, 2022

Sharing this well written in-depth article from "The Advertiser-Tribune" that covers important elements being addressed during the course of the preservation work slated for the Rock Run Cemetery in Seneca County, Ohio.

Local historian, Stephen Hartzell, and cemetery preservation professional, Steve Coffman - Monumental Task Cemetery Preservation LLC, both who hail from Tiffin, have laid out a sound plan from the beginning point of this preservation project and concluding with a public plea for crucial donations.

********

Excerpt from this story.:
"A $54 donation can pay for a gallon of D-2, the chemical that cleans gravestones without causing damage, or it can help purchase other supplies.

An $85 donation can pay for a package of epoxy for repairing broken stones.

Any donation amount is welcome. Make checks payable to “Eden Twp. Rock Run Cemetery Fund” with “For repair and restoration” in the notes section. Mail checks to Eden Township, c/o Julie Vogel, Fiscal Officer, 4826 E. CR 6, Tiffin, Ohio 44883."

White Bronze Markers and Monuments bring Beauty and Wonder to the Attica Venice Township Joint Cemetery and Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery - Attica, Seneca County, Ohio

On July 17, 2018, I visited the Attica Venice Township Joint Cemetery and the adjoining Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Seneca County, Ohio.

I had heard that the larger Attica Venice Township Joint Cemetery contains over 100 white bronze markers and monuments!

So, on my way to Findlay to do some antique shopping, I decided to make visiting these cemeteries my first stop.

These are not large cemeteries, however, a visitor could easily spend quite a lot of time walking row by row reading the inscriptions and marveling at the grand white bronze (zinc) monuments; some that tower above all of the markers around them.

At both cemeteries, newly erected gray granite monuments serve as official cemetery signs.

At the Attica Venice Township Joint Cemetery, the cemetery's official name monument is near the Ohio Historical Marker (erected in 2017) that commemorates the life and sacrifice of World War I nurse Clara Edith (Work) Ayres who is buried at the Attica Venice Township Joint Cemetery.  These historical markers are always a welcome sight to any visitor.  They draw you to them to learn more about the cemetery and some of the notable local people who are buried there.

I realize now that my eager rambling through both cemeteries was too brief. I know a second visit is warranted to find even more interesting markers and monuments; including more of those white bronze beauties that have weathered so well through the decades, indeed centuries.
