Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

The Methodist Cemetery on Find A Grave

Wednesday, April 13, 2022

Sharing from "The Portager" - "Kent's Pioneer Cemetery is looking for more volunteers" - Learn more at the April 27 2022 - 7p.m. meeting at the Kent Historical Society.

Volunteerism at cemeteries; particularly at older smaller cemeteries that have less resources than their larger counterparts, is quite crucial to have in order to keep routine maintenance going without interruptions.

~~*~*~*~*~*~*~~

So it is that news of volunteer opportunities should be welcomed by those looking to not only participate to help a cause at a needy cemetery, but also to further their own experience to become better trained hands-on cemetery volunteers.  This is true because as we know good intentions alone are not enough for volunteers to have for conducting tasks unless they gain experience using proper products and do no harm methods when working with grave markers.  There are also additional tasks required at gravesites.

~~*~*~*~*~*~*~~

This volunteer opportunity at the Stow Street Cemetery in Kent, Portage County, Ohio (listed on Find A Grave as Stow Street Cemetery AKA Pioneer Cemetery) is described as:

"Volunteers typically “adopt” a grave or family plot, clearing it of weeds and perhaps planting flowers or other foliage in time for Memorial Day."

~~*~*~*~*~*~*~~

"Anyone interested in learning about the cemetery or participating is welcome to attend the group’s meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 27 at the Kent Historical Society, 237 E. Main St. Refreshments, including adult beverages, will be served."
