In this case, we easily see that the longer a cemetery is abandoned the monuments fall into disrepair in various ways, and ultimately disappear to the point the landscape no longer resembles the early Ohio burial ground that it truly is.

Sharing this fascinating and exceedingly educational hour and six minute long cemetery video tour of an obscure but overall well kept Ohio cemetery that lies in Madison Township, in Scioto County. 

This remarkable video's excellent quality shines all the way through. 

Eli Allen's reading of the tombstone inscriptions with close up views of most of the cemetery's early markers provide the viewer a real sense of a steeped history of the pioneer settlers and this region they shaped.  The tour moves orderly from row to row making for a smooth and impactful presentation.

"We think of cemeteries being conveniently located open spaces. Places where passers-by would contemplate their mortality and family members would commune with those gone before, but the places and how we travel has changed much in the last century. 

Folks once navigated the ridge lines instead of the valley floors, and there they buried their dead. 

Shawnee State Forest has many of these burial grounds. Here they were placed not because it was unfarmable waste ground because hillsides and tops were farmed as well, but because the ridges were free of flooding and were the highways of their time.

Spotlighting a New Update from "Past Lives Photography" that also Brought Back a Memory and a Sad Discovery for me.

Beth Wilson Shoemaker and her "A Grave Sight Cemetery Photographs by BAWS" posted a new link on Facebook, on March 3, 2018, connecting to her Past Lives Photography Blog (a link for it is also included in this blog) with an update detailing her visit to the almost lost and forgotten Mastin Family Cemetery in Clay Twp., Scioto County, Ohio.  

Learning of Beth's discovery led to my own recollection of someone who helped me in 1997 with documenting a relatively obscure Ohio cemetery --- the Friends (Quaker) Cemetery in North Lewisburg, Champaign County Ohio.  

I am writing about surveyor, Mr. James L. Murphy, who, himself, had paid an earlier visit to the Mastin Cemetery.  Thankfully, he shared his research results on the USGenWeb site on November 16, 2007.  He provided his listing of the inscriptions on the gravestones he found at the Mastin Cemetery.  His work included surveying the little cemetery for the Ohio Historic Inventory . The cemetery information was added to the official records at the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection).  The OHI number for the Mastin Cemetery is SCI0046813.

So, while searching for information on the Mastin (Mastin Family) Cemetery in Scioto County, I decided to do a "Google" search for James L. Murphy who I had not communicated with for several years following our exchanges regarding the Friends Cemetery.  

Sadly, I learned that he had passed away on October 8th, 2012.  

I dedicate this blog post to James L. Murphy whose assistance helped me complete the first Ohio Historic Inventory Form that I finished in 1997.  Over the years, I completed seven more OHI forms for other early Ohio cemeteries.

As reported in the Portsmouth "Daily Times" news of the upcoming December 10, 2017 open house at the Greenlawn Cemetery.

"On Sunday, December 10th, from 1 to 4 p.m., The Friends of Greenlawn Cemetery Foundation will host “Christmas at the Historic Greenlawn Cemetery Chapel.” The event, which is free to the public, will provide an opportunity to view the interior of the seasonally decorated chapel and to light a memorial candle for a lost loved one."

"Eliza Ellen Presley Bailey and sons David and Joseph Jr."

"Eliza Ellen Presley Bailey – 1888-1930, metal marker. Eliza Ellen Bailey, 40, gave birth to her seventh child, son David Marshall Bailey, on 10 Dec 1930 and died the next day in Mercy hospital. Infant son David died in June 1931, six months after his mother’s death, and his brother Joseph W. Bailey Jr., 4, died the next month, in July 1931, after being struck by a car. Mrs. Bailey was born in Scioto County, Ohio, a daughter of Howard and Lettie Presley and spent most of her life in Portsmouth, Ohio. She was a member of the New Boston Christian Church. She was survived by her husband Joseph W. Bailey Sr.; six children, Nellie, Robert, Albert, Virginia, Joseph W. Jr., and David; a brother, John Presley of Columbus, Ohio; and three sisters, Mary Locher of New Boston, Ohio, Laura Schomberg and Hattie Neal of Hicksville, Ohio. Her son David’s obituary lists another child, Ruth, who preceded him in death. Services for Mrs. Bailey were held from the Emrick funeral home with Walter Bagley officiating. Note: A funeral notice says that interment was in Greenlawn cemetery. However, family members say she was buried in the Milldale Cemetery and a 1997 cemetery inventory supports that. David Marshall Bailey – 1930-1931, metal marker. David was born 10 Dec 1930 in Ohio, a son of Joseph H. Bailey Sr. and Eliza Ellen Presley Bailey. His mother died the next day. David died six months later on 14 Jun 1931. In addition to his father, David was survived by brothers Albert, Robert and Joseph Jr. and sisters Virginia and Nellie. A sister Ruth preceded him in death. Sources: 1. 1997 Campbell-Underwood inventory, No. 58 on the map. 2. Obituary, The Portsmouth Times, 15 June 1931, Page 13. 3. Ohio death records.

Joseph W. Bailey Jr. – 1925-1931. Metal marker. Joseph W. Bailey Jr., 4, died after being hit by an automobile around midnight on 25 July 1931. According to a newspaper article, the little boy had stepped out into the street from behind a parked car. The driver, who was exonerated, rushed the Joseph to the hospital. Joseph was a son of J.W. Bailey Sr. and the late Eliza Ellen Presley Bailey. 

This was the third death in the Bailey family within a few months. Mrs. Bailey died in December 1930 after giving birth to her seventh child, David. David, six months old, died in June 1931, a month before Joseph was killed. Mrs. Bailey and David are also buried in the Milldale Cemetery. Joseph was survived by his father, sisters Nellie and Virginia, and brothers Robert and Albert. Sources: 1. 1997 Campbell-Underwood inventory, No. 57 on the map. 2. family members. 3. The tombstone is in worse shape than in 2010."

 

 

Meeting Announcement: Scioto County Chapter of O. G. S. is Hosting a Presentation about Grave Dowsing - June 14, 2014

"June 14, 2014 - Speaker Mr. Harold George will share with us about Grave Dowsing. Dowsing is an age old art that has been used for centuries to locate water, graves, and other elements below the earth's surface, using a dowsing rod or wand. Basic dowsing techniques will be presented. Those in attendance will be shown how to make their own dowsing rods. Program goals are: Provide insight into burial practices observed throughout history, as well as during the Civil War; Provide techniques used for locating unmarked gravesites; Ideal for both Novice and Expert genealogists; Everyone in attendance receives a free quick reference guide to grave dowsing. Immediately following the meeting all will be welcome to rejoin at Greenlawn Cemetery for a hands on demonstration."
