Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

"IRLAB" and the Ohio State University's Department of Anthropology are resuming their collaborative research in Pickaway County this summer - July 3 - 28, 2023

 *****Announcement*****:

Sharing from The Institute for Research and Learning in Archaeology and Bioarchaeology ("IRLAB") in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology of The Ohio State University.:

"I am pleased to inform you that, after the disruptions caused by the pandemic over the past few years, our Field Experience in Bioarchaology in Ohio will resume this summer.

The Field Experience in Bioarchaology - offered in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology at The Ohio State University - is an outstanding opportunity for students to gain practical experience in archaeological excavation and bioarchaeological investigation by working on a historic cemetery in central Ohio. This program was developed to offer high-quality bioarchaeological excavation training in the US and at affordable rates. The field experience welcomes undergraduate and graduate students, as well as CRM and forensic science professionals interested in developing skills in the excavation of human remains.

The Institute for Research and Learning in Archaeology and Bioarchaeology (IRLAB) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established to promote the advancement and diffusion of archaeological and bioarchaeological knowledge through research and education.

The institute has worked to accomplish this goal since 2014, using the leading technological methods to analyze and document the excavation of human burials from the archaeological context at sites in the United States and Italy.

The work of the organization has been featured in Science Magazine and has led to collaborative efforts with dozens of institutions of higher learning."

"PROJECT DESCRIPTION"

"This exclusively field-based program, now in its second year, aims at familiarizing participants with the professional excavation of human remains from archaeological contexts.
Participants will work side by side with professional archaeologists and bioarchaeologists in the excavations of a historic cemetery in central Ohio (HTCC).
The cemetery, located just 20 minutes away from downtown Columbus, was originally established as early as 1804 to serve as a burial ground for the local community.
Due to its proximity to the Ohio-Erie canal, the site was subsequently used as a resting place for victims of the infectious disease cholera – an infection of the small intestine that killed tens of millions of people worldwide through various pandemics since 1815. The cemetery remained in use until 1859.
Preliminary investigations at the site have revealed the presence of several single burials with predominant east-west orientation, which appear largely undisturbed and lined up in the western two thirds of the cemetery.
Several tombstones or simple markers are scattered throughout the field, but evidence of vandalism and consequent removal and restoration attempts by the township administration suggest that their current location does not mark any specific graves and does likely not correspond to the original layout of the cemetery."
