The W.PA. Cemetery Plat Maps for Morrow County, Ohio have been added to the right column of the blog.

These 1930s era W.P.A. cemetery plat maps were part of The Works Progress Administration that was later re-named the Works Projects Administration.
This project was undertaken throughout Ohio and resulted in bound albums of cemetery map drawings for a county identifying the city or township where each cemetery is situated.
Regarding Morrow County, as what has been noted with W.P.A. Cemetery Plat Maps in other Ohio counties, the project itself has a Title Page which is normally Page 1. That page is followed by an Index of Cemeteries for the entire county on Page 2. Referencing the index while working on this project was quite helpful for keeping track of the map pages that were accessed, revised, named, and saved.

The larger cemeteries (most are in larger cities such as county seats) have several sections and require more than one page. Thus, these cemeteries may also have their own Title Page and a "Key Map" showing a cemetery's Sections or Blocks; in whatever system of naming them that was adopted.:

Near the end of the project, there is an increase in the number of pages containing multiple cemetery map drawings of smaller cemeteries. There could two, three, or even four cemetery plat maps on a single page. Like with the larger cemeteries, known veterans buried at a cemetery are listed with the number identifying the war in which they served, and their grave location at the cemetery. The map drawing itself will reflect the burials with black coffin shaped symbols placed within the appropriate lot number on the map drawing.

Most map pages will contain what is often referred to as a "Legend". It is a box in the lower right corner of the map page containing a listing of the wars America was engaged in from the time of the American Revolution to World War I; and each has its own number designation.

It is hoped that these maps will be of help to those who wish to locate a veteran's gravesite (through World War I) in the State of Ohio.

Spotlighting the recent complex repair and restoration of the Thomas and Mary Iiams obelisk monument at the West Point Cemetery, Congress Township, Morrow County, Ohio
Please Note:
First and most importantly, it cannot be stressed enough that because this was a complex repair and restoration of a tall obelisk that was broken in two heavy large pieces, this type of work should only be attempted and undertaken by a licensed and insured professional working in the field who has undergone training and has had experience conducting this type of work in the same or similar setting.

Tim, with assistance from his son, completed the needed repair and restoration process.
The photographs were taken during the stages of this complex repair of the monument for Thomas James Iiams and his wife, Mary Polly Hardesty Iiams.

As can be seen in the series of photographs, the obelisk had been lying on the ground in two large pieces.
The Iiams gravesite and family plot is at the West Point Cemetery in Congress Township, Morrow County, Ohio.

"DAR Honors Chesterville Patriots" - from the Mount Vernon News - October 14 2019
Sharing a link to an abbreviated internet write-up with short video by the "Mount Vernon News"of this event held on Saturday, October 12, 2019. It was to dedicate a marker to honor the service and sacrifice of four Revolutionary War veterans buried at the Chester Baptist Cemetery in Morrow County, Ohio. The cemetery is adjacent to the Chester Baptist Church that celebrated a bicentennial this year. It is the oldest church in Morrow County.

It was only one day prior to the ceremonies that professional cemetery conservator Tim Foor of Hallowed Ground Cemetery Preservation, LLC uncovered the original marker for Revolutionary War veteran Private Peter Doty. He proceeded to clean, repair, and reset it in time for the ceremonies.

"Tombstones repair continues" -- From the "Morrow County Sentinel" -- Updated Report about Tim Foor's Restoration of the Pagetown Cemetery
"PAGETOWN — What a difference several weeks of hard work can make."
"The landscape of the dilapidated, historic Pagetown Cemetery has taken on a new look, thanks to the efforts of Tim Foor. Broken tombstones have been repaired and reset along County Road 26, south of Marengo.
Weather has been a challenge, with several days of heavy rain halting work this month.
“The rain slowed us down. You can’t risk it as holes were filled with water, but they drained. When it drops below 50 degrees you can’t do the repairs,” he said.
When it gets colder than that the epoxy won’t set.
Bennington Township trustees hired Foor in early August to help repair the stones, damaged by nearly two centuries of weathering. Lichen build-up, cracks in the stones and bases were evident. Most are sandstone, others are marble.
Foor estimated there could be as many as 230 graves buried in the rectangular lot. The first burial was in 1821 and the last burial was in 1876.
As of Sept. 13, he’s repaired about 30 of them.
“The marble sits around and it starts to crumble,” Foor said as he carefully placed pieces together that he’s found on the site.
“You have to scrape it. Glue things together. I try really hard not to mess up the letters,” he said.
Foor has about 10 stones to finish.
In the corner of the field sits a large pile of rocks that he’s uncovered and he’s certain are not part of any tombstones.
The first row is composed primarily of Wilson family members. Foor tried to make out the intricate letters on one of the stones.
“It’s all busted up. You can’t read it any more.”
A transcription list from the Morrow County Genealogical Society also aided him in starting the project.
“I was able to follow the path they took through the cemetery with the list.”
Up until 1848, this area was part of Delaware County. So Foor got records from the auditor’s office there to help fill in the gaps.
Working on the Marcus Page family obelisk is tenuous.
“It’s pretty level, but it’s twisted a bit,” he said. “Cleaning that up is an all-day project.”
Finding as many pieces to the smaller grave stones involves a bit of detective work.
“I’m putting pieces together trying to see what matches.”
He is intrigued by the Kenedy family buried at Pagetown. Rachel was buried in 1828. Her brother George has no death date and there is a Norton there also.
“The initials N.K. are on his foot stone,” Foor said. “A lot of the graves here have foot stones, and those can be a little hint.”
The engraving of A.M.W. matches the head stone of Abby Mary Wilson, who, according to the epitaph, was in her “34th year of being” when she passed away.
His efforts have attracted attention from Columbus media outlets and cemetery preservation groups on social media.
“My goal has been to just preserve it and do as little harm as possible,” Foor said. “I just want to make it look nice again.”"

Tim Foor says it needed to be done.
"It's been in rough shape for quite some time," he said.
Records kept the Pagetown Cemetery in Bennington Township up-to-date until 1948. By that time, Foor says grazing cattle had knocked over and destroyed many of the headstones."

There is a well done video for this story that is inspiring so many who are viewing it to follow in the footsteps of Mr. Tim Foor and learn to properly clean, repair, and re-set old gravestones.
As has been written in the past in this blog, the key word is always "properly"!!
First, we need to feel compelled to join the ever growing number of people who want to become proactive with saving a cemetery! It happens one gravemarker at a time and one row at a time. It can happen through donations or hands-on work, but we know it is happening! Ohio is destined to become a leader in restoring its cemeteries and and returning respect for all of those who now rest in peace in them. "
