Please note that the Shelby County W.P.A. Cemetery Plats do not contain the names of veterans on their map pages.  Yes, this is a setback for those who are researching Shelby County Ohio veteran burials.  However, all is not lost!

Shelby County does have the individual W.P.A. veteran grave cards, however they are not posted on the Recorder's website.  

These grave cards for Shelby County can be found on the website Fold3.  Also, anyone living in Ohio can get a virtual library card from any Ohio public library and research from home.

There are some cemeteries that list American Revolutionary War veterans burials, but two stand out as having more considering their size.:

The Pioneer Cemetery in Sugar Creek Township lists four.:

Below is a handy guide showing the listing of the numbers associated with the wars ranging from 1 through 33, with number 31 being World War I or the "World War" which was a term used for it at the time the war was being fought.  That is a "good to know fact" if you are researching historical newspapers published from 1914 - 1918 (when the war was fought) and onward until World War II began.

Note:  Number 31, the last number on the listing, shows as "World War" which we know it today to having been WWI.

As is the case with other W.P.A. Cemetery Plat Map collections for other Ohio counties, the smaller cemeteries on a page, with multiple townships on one page, are saved in their own album. 

Names of the cemeteries appear in the Album Description section since there are several of them - too numerous to list in the title.

Sharing also a small sampling of the Legend of Wars / History Box images in this Mercer County collection. These double outlined boxes appearing in the lower right-hand corner of a cemetery plat map page, are worth referencing because they can contain additional information pertinent to the cemetery.  

Also, normally there is at least a short listing of the numbers associated with the wars Americans served in - i.e. number 1 for the American Revolutionary War; number 10 for the War of 1812; number 19 for the Civil War, etc. that will be needed when referencing the veteran burials listed on the map page for each cemetery.

On Page 31 - The Murlin Cemetery lists Henry Leasor as having been buried there who was an American Revolutionary War veteran.:

The Macedon Cemetery lists two American Revolutionary War veterans buried there. Amos Spencer and James Shoonover.  Neither veteran is shown on Find a Grave for the Macedon Cemetery, however.

Pickaway County is primarily a rural county. 

It was perhaps even more so when these maps were drawn up during the decade of the 1930s; during the years of the Great Depression when the W.P.A. program was in place.

On the Cemetery Index Page, there are 57 cemeteries listed with the word "Farm" in their names.

Pickaway County contains several American Revolutionary War veteran burials.:

Above is a photograph posted here with permission from the photographer of the large gray granite memorial monument for Revolutionary War veterans who were buried in Pickaway County but whose exact location is unknown.  

This monument is at Forest Cemetery in Circleville.  

Capt. Eleazer Williamson is included on the list.  

On Find a Grave he is shown as buried at the Presbyterian Cemetery which is Page number 62 on the Cemetery Index.

There are some map pages where veterans names are listed and their gravesite location shown; however, their war number -- example: the number "1" designation for the American Revolutionary War, is missing.

Note: that the Yankeetown Cemetery is listed on Find a Grave as being in Fayette County. 

However, in the Pickaway County collection of W.P.A. Cemetery Plat Maps, Yankeetown Cemetery is shown as being in Monroe Township, Pickaway County which is next to the border with Fayette County.:

Pickaway County's W.P.A. Cemetery Plat Maps are a fascinating collection containing several pages of smaller family cemeteries that in some instances have now disappeared.  Because of the W.P.A. workers' documentation of their location and veteran burial information, the existence of these early burial grounds is proven and their records have been preserved for our further research.

The Pleasant View Cemetery (AKA Pleasant View Union Cemetery) has a Soldiers' Circle.

"The Pleasant View Cemetery is located west of Maple Street and south of Ontario Street in the southwest section of the village of Fayette. The older section of Pleasant View Cemetery was a family burial ground on land owned by John Gamber. By 1852 the site had been expanded to serve the local area. The first burial is difficult to determine as grave markers were moved to Pleasant View from abandoned cemeteries. The first burial may have been as early as 1836."

2025 will be another banner year for cemetery preservation hands-on events at Ohio cemeteries and we'll follow the news about them.

2024 was a stellar year with a 48 State cemetery workshop by Jonathan Appell; and it looks like it will be repeated in 2025 with a stop here again in Ohio.

The 2024 Ohio cemetery workshop was held at the Brookmere Cemetery in Cleveland and it was quite well attended!

If you didn't receive this book for Christmas you may want to look into purchasing it for yourself - "This Place of Silence" Ohio's Cemeteries and burial grounds by Ian Adams.    

I highly recommend it whether you are a seasoned visitor to Ohio's cemeteries or not.  There is always something new to learn and appreciate about Ohio's cemeteries!

I feel ALL of Ohio's cemeteries are historic!

  I personally feel that a cemetery doesn't need to have a national designation of one sort or another to be considered a 'historic" cemetery or burial ground.  

All are worthy of being preserved and protected for the present and the future.  

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Thus, every cemetery in Ohio is worth preserving and protecting.  As we know, once they're gone, they're gone, unless action is taken to prevent their deterioration from continuing until it is too late.  

Thus, it is vitally important to take the necessary steps to correct the problems that plague them - moving forward with a solid plan to ensure success!

We can accomplish this goal in a variety of ways including engaging in hands-on preservation work at a cemetery; conducting in-person documentation by transcribing the inscriptions on tombstones -- noting the motifs and carvings on them -- remembering to look for a carver's name or initials before walking away!; contacting lawmakers to pass legislation that improves the laws to better protect Ohio's cemeteries; and our strong vocal and written advocacy promoting preservation of Ohio's cemeteries -- ALL of its cemeteries! This can come through contacting the media, contacting Ohio's lawmakers, and contacting like-minded people to join you -- possibly create a Facebook Page for your cemetery of concern or for one in crisis!

The Cemetery Index page appears to have been covered with some older type of plastic that has yellowed and wrinkled over time, thus making it more difficult to read all of the cemetery names and numbers for them.

Also, please note there are penciled-in notations for later wars inside the Legend box for each cemetery.:

 #3 for WWII, #5 for the Korean War, and #7 for the Vietnam War.  

Further note, however, these numbers do not correspond with the original and official W.P.A. Cemetery Plat Map numbers that were created during the time the program was in place, which was during the 1930s.  Those numbers were assigned to other wars.:

#3 - Warfare with Indians on the frontier.
#5 - War with France
#7 - War with Tripoli.

This Pike County W.P.A. Cemetery Map collection consists of maps that essentially are original drawings created early in the project with limited handwritten information in the Legend Box that is positioned at the bottom of a map page in the lower right-hand corner.  The map pages are numbered.

Unfortunately, only one of these map pages include the names of any of the veterans who were buried at any of the cemeteries in Pike County.

Unlike the W.P.A .Cemetery Plat Map pages in other counties, there is only one instance with a map page having mixed townships for the cemeteries.  

Otherwise, it is uniform throughout with only one township name for any number of cemeteries on a page.  

Below is the image of Page 1 that has one cemetery in Camp Creek Township and the remainder of the cemeteries are located in Sunfish Township.:
