Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

The following townships comprise Vinton County.:
Brown, Clinton, Eagle, Elk, Harrison, Jackson, Knox,
Madison, Richland, and Wilkesville.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Vinton County is mostly a rural county.
At the time these maps were created during the 1930s, 13 cemeteries had the name Farm included for them.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
There are 31 map pages that are in the "Multiple Townships - Smaller Cemeteries" category.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The Cemetery Index page appears to have been covered with some older type of plastic that has yellowed and wrinkled over time, thus making it more difficult to read all of the cemetery names and numbers for them.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
There is an Addenda page listing the veterans with unknown burial locations.

Note:

WPA CEMETERY PLAT MAPS - VINTON COUNTY - WILKESVILLE TWP - WILKESVILLE CEM - VETS NAMES INCLUDING AGNES C LAMB - PAGE 46

Agnes was a Major in the WACS during WWII.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Also, please note there are penciled-in notations for later wars inside the Legend box for each cemetery.:

#3 for WWII, #5 for the Korean War, and #7 for the Vietnam War.

Further note, however, these numbers do not correspond with the original and official W.P.A. Cemetery Plat Map numbers that were created during the time the program was in place, which was during the 1930s.  Those numbers were assigned to other wars.:

#3 - Warfare with Indians on the frontier.
#5 - War with France
#7 - War with Tripoli.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The overall condition of these maps is fair to poor with the Cemetery Index Page being in the most unreadable condition unfortunately.

Notes about the Vinton County, Ohio W.P.A. Cemetery plat maps.:

The cemetery index page is quite difficult to read due to the fact it was copied under a wrinkled plastic cover sheet.  The page is quite fragile and faded.

Fortunately, most map pages have their page numbers in the lower right-hand corner similar to what is seen for other Ohio county WPA Cemetery Plat Maps.
There is no Cemetery Locator Map, however, the cemetery maps do show a penciled-in number above the cemetery name like " #2" that would correspond with its location in the county should the cemetery locater map exist. However, none could be found. Note the example below for Oak Grove Cemetery in Madison Township the #70 would correspond with its location in Vinton County on a Cemetery Locator Map.:

Major - WACS in World War II
Served in the Women's Army Corps for 11 years
The entry for Agnes C. Lamb is shown penciled-in on the Wilkesville Cemetery Map.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Duplication:  Wyckoff Cemetery and Wycoff Cemetery:

Both maps show an Ezekiel Knight and a Ezekiel Jarvis as two different soldiers buried at the Wyckoff Cemetery which is listed on Find A Grave, and also Wycoff Cemetery which is not listed on Find A Grave.  Each W.P.A. Cemetery Plat Map has its own cemetery locator number, and they are different.  Wyckoff Cemetery has #25, and the Wycoff Cemetery has #110.  So, it is unfortunate that the Cemetery Locator Map page is missing from this collection of W.P.A. Cemetery Plat Maps for Vinton County.

In Madison Township, Vinton County, Ohio.:

Find A Grave contributor, Brad Buck, has provided quite a lot of military information about George Warner.
**********
George Warner is also shown on the map for St. Mary's Cemetery, but he is not shown buried there on Find A Grave.

Also, what is unique to this particular collection is that at some point later on from when the maps were first drawn, others added in by pencil the following information.:
#3 WWII; #5 Korean; and #7 Vietnam - thus adding those numbers on most maps for the later wars. As we know when the W.P.A. Cemetery Plat maps were created it was at a time during the years of the Great Depression in America from approximately 1932 to 1941 when World War II began. The numbers 3, 5, and 7, were already assigned to lesser known wars up to that time (#3 = Warfare with Indians on frontier) (#5 = War with France) (#7 = War with Tripoli).

There are a few map pages with deteriorated condition issues, however over all, most pages are readable and have their page numbers.

Moonville Cemetery in Vinton County, Ohio suffered severe vandalism attack yet again

The "Scioto Post" feature story (November 16 2020) by Jeremy Newman.:

"200 year-old Southern Ohio Cemetery Vandalized Again in Less than a Year"  brings tremendous heartbreak for those who have been following the sad saga of this tiny rural abandoned cemetery that only has 26 Find A Grave memorials.  The article states that the Vinton County Sheriff is investigating.

The extent of the damage is sickening and saddening.  No cemetery should be subjected to such disgusting desecration. The photographs tell the story beyond what any words could convey for understanding.

A Facebook page entitled "Moonville Rail Trail Association" today (November 16 2020) also broke the news about this latest vandalism attack on the tiny burying ground. Included in the post is a link to the "Go Fund Me" account set up for the needs of the Moonville Cemetery.

Once again we are reminded that in the State of Ohio, cemetery grant fund money is only available to certain categories of cemeteries.  Inactive / abandoned, family, and for-profit cemeteries are excluded from receiving cemetery grant money funds that originated from the passage of HB168.

Once these pioneer burying grounds are gone - they are gone for good; and we can't take them for granted.

Ohio's lawmakers need to strengthen and update existing Ohio Revised Codes that impact all of the state's cemeteries.

The passage of stronger legislation  is crucial.  It should include funding for any cemetery in crisis regardless of its status -- i.e. registered and non-registered cemeteries alike.

Over the years, several posts have been shared here about active cemeteries with no owners, for-profit cemeteries that have multiple unresolved long-standing complaints about those responsible for them.

The list of problems goes on and on.

The need is urgent for Ohio's cemeteries which are all at risk for vandalism or for other reasons; and sadly remains so as we move toward 2021.

Although the Moonville Cemetery is located in a remote location in Ohio's least populous county, it has attracted attention over the years for paranormal reasons.
