Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

Fir Street (now Avenue) Cemetery - Cleveland's West Side

Click on title for a story from today's The Plain Dealer, Metro Section, Cleveland, Ohio, details with photographs and street map of the cemetery's location. The successful completion of renovation of the "Fir Street Cemetery" required
many helping hands from many faiths and backgrounds who came and worked together to accomplish their goal - and it is proper and fitting to express appreciation to all who participated and contributed.

According to the article, an open house is slated for this Saturday, May 30, however, I did not see a starting time stated in this newspaper account.

It is always a pleasure to report and link to a cemetery success story as heartwarming as this one is as the results prove how people working together can transform their efforts into long-term betterment for burial sites of early settlers who were pioneer's of an area's early history.

Updates will be forthcoming regarding her wonderful work researching the Gilboa Cemetery and details on the availability of the information documented.

Gilboa Cemetery can be found on page 289 of the Ohio Genealogical Society's publication: " Ohio Cemeteries - 1803 - 2003". It states for location: "Southwest off TR 319A. Between CR 84A and SR 138. On the bank of Fall Creek." Located west of Greenfield.
