Exploring Almost Forgotten Gravesites in the Great State of Ohio

Dedicated to cemetery preservation in the great state of Ohio

"A cemetery may be considered as abandoned when all or practically all of the bodies have been Removed therefrom and no bodies have been buried therein for a great many years, and the cemetery has been so long neglected as entirely to lose its identity as such, and is no longer known, recognized and respected by the public as a cemetery. 1953 OAG 2978."

The Warren County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society was quite busy with their cemetery restoration workshop that was held in September, 2023.

Stunning photographs and highlights of the cemetery restoration workshop are also offered on the website of the Warren County Chapter of O.G.S.

An Alternative Link to locating and obtaining WPA Cemetery Plat Maps in Warren County, Ohio

The Warren County Records Center Archive Index for Warren County, Ohio is currently the alternative avenue to take when obtaining Warren County, Ohio WPA Cemetery Plat Maps.
Remember when the Warren County Genealogical Society (Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society) had their massive website on Rootsweb? Then because of changes on the website, most of Rootsweb was "down" for a long period of time.  I quit trying to keep track of how sites came slowly back on, but more and more did. Unfortunately, not all of the content on them returned.
  For Warren County Genealogical Society's "Virtual Cemetery" link that included the WPA Cemetery Plat Maps, those still cannot be viewed.

So the workaround is to use the Warren County Record Center's Archive Index, and follow up with a phone call to order your WPA Cemetery Plat Map(s).
See screen print below.:
ALSO:
There is a choice for searching by name in the Veteran's Gravesite Index:
From a member of the Warren County Genealogical Society.:

"This is one of the many reasons we are building a new website.
Our cemetery records are on the Rootsweb servers, and unfortunately, still not accessible online.
They ARE, however, available in the library!
We'll keep everyone updated on how the new website build is coming along and what the expected release date will be.

 The access to the full cemetery index / photos / etc. that previously was accessed on the Rootsweb site is in the Warren County Genealogical Society Library, located in the lower level of the Warren County Administration Building.
The volunteers are WONDERFUL and so willing to help. If you need something before we get everything up and running, just give them a call at 513-695-1144."

Sharing photographs of some of the markers and monuments standing at the Pioneer Cemetery in Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio.
~~~~~~~~
The Pioneer Cemetery was the site of a restoration workshop held a few years ago.
However, these photographs show that additional preservation work remains to be done because many of the gravestones and momunents, including some veterans markers, are in need of proper care for serious condition issues.
Notes from "Find A Grave" about the Pioneer Cemetery:
"Cemetery notes and/or description:
The cemetery is a city block bounded by Main Street, West Street, Mulberry Street, and Harrison Street within the city of Lebanon. Although the cemetery is now a single entity, the north half was originally the Baptist Graveyard and was known as the Old Baptist Graveyard. The south half was the Methodist Cemetery and, likewise, was known as the Old Methodist Graveyard. The Old Baptist Graveyard began about 1811 when the Baptist church moved their church from a site east of Lebanon to a lot in the western part of town. The churchyard was used as a burying ground. The Old Methodist Graveyard did not come into use until 1820.
The cemetery is #12292 in “Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003”, compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 1044484 (Pioneer Cemetery)."
The Warren County Historical Society presents its annual Lantern Light Cemetery Tours led by its Historian, Mr. John Zimkus Friday evening
September 7 and repeating Saturday evening, September 8 at the Lebanon Cemetery on Silver Street.
The tour pays homage to noted Lebanon citizens of
the past, who were prominent, both at home and on the national scene.
The tour will visit the graves of fifteen prominent citizens where guests will meet the “spirit” of the departed. The cost of the tour is $20 per person and reservations must be purchased in advance.
Volunteers from the Glendower Historic Characters play the parts of the citizens of old.
Dressed in costume, each character will emerge from the shadows from behind his or her tombstone and speak to the guests about the character’s life in old Lebanon and beyond.
Designed to be a local history lesson, the tour also provides music and theatre as the dear departed “come to life” at the hands of their costumed
re-enactors.
The Lantern Light Cemetery Tour will thrill and educate at the same time.
The tours will begin before dark at 6:30 pm and end approximately at 8:30pm.
Guests should plan to park on Silver Street and other surrounding streets, not in the cemetery.
This event is a fund raiser for the Warren County Historical Society and all proceeds will go to benefit Glendower Historic Mansion in Lebanon.
For reservations contact the Warren County Historical Society at
513-932-1817 or email at gro.muesumshcw@shcw. Cash, check or credit cards
accepted.
